why film

Film empowers first-generation American voices by celebrating and challenging generations of traditions. I carry the legacy of my South Asian heritage to compose stories of how some archaic traditions clash in a progressive society today. Often I am pressured to pursue a career that has a traditional path to “guarantee success.” Through my journey in film, I raise awareness of the cultural reproach on sexual orientation and shine a positively critical light on the controversies of arranged marriages and cliche career choices. I explore the roots of entrenched mindsets that success is not possible without a guaranteed career or that sexuality is nonexistent. As I break the traditional path to success, I can constantly challenge my creativity and unique perspective to strengthen those people of my culture and beyond. Currently, I’m a senior at El Segundo High. There, I’m president of film club where we watch, discuss, and create films.
